The Khalique Cup was held this last Bank Holiday Monday at Purton Tennis Club. The tournament was a huge success thanks to organiser Mary Turner’s driving influence, and a bit of help in sorting the order of play at the start of the day from eventual Champions Josh Langley and Angie Baldock. Players started turning up at 9.30 and it wasn’t long before the kettle was on, the food was laid out by the generous folk at Purton and the tennis was under way. The players were split into two groups, one of 5 pairs and one of 6, the two teams who won the most games from each group would go on to play in a semi-final, before the competition would be decided in the final. The group of 5 pairs would play their group matches to 7 games while the larger group would play to the regular 6. The closest match of the mornings play came from Josh and Angie playing Ash and Rachana. It was very tight contest and Ash was serving for the match at 6-5, but lost his serve to make it 6-6. With nothing to separate the two pairs it went to a tie break which Angie and Josh won 9-7.
In the first of the semi-finals, group winners Angie and Josh beat fellow Purtonians Ethan and Alexa 6-2 to advance to the final. The other semi saw a South Cerney pairing of Mark and Roweena take on Ash and Rachana. The Purton pair came out on top 6-2 setting up a rematch against Josh and Angie. All players held serve to make it 4-4, Angie went on to hold her serve to make it 5-4, and the top seeds managed to break in the final game to win 6-4 overall, and claim the Khalique Cup.
Josh was very gracious in victory. “It was a really tough match” he said in his press conference. “I have no idea how Ash isn’t playing in the A team this season, he’s proved that he’s come a long way in the last few months. He beat Jason so quickly and easily today, he made him look like an enthusiastic amateur. It’s just unlucky that Jason picks the teams”.
