With all the practice sessions over, the summer season has finally begun. The Ladies A are sitting comfortably in mid table in division 1 after 2 matches and the Ladies B are 2nd in Div 2 and are undefeated with 1 win and 1 draw. The Ladies C are in 6th place in Div 4 after 3 matches recording 1 draw and 2 losses.
The Mixed A team are top of division 1 winning both of their matches played, the B team who are also in division 1, are in 7th place losing both matches. The mixed C are going strong in Div 3, winning 1 and losing 1 and sit in 3rd place.
The Men’s A are top with two wins from 2 and so are the Mixed A. The Men’s B find themselves in 5th place after losing to Nationwide and narrowly to David Lloyd. The Men’s C are in 6th place, but have only played 1 match so far, losing to Pewsey.
The Men’s D team are a great success story for the club. Men’s club captain Jason Stevens entered the D team as a development squad under the stewardship of team captain Justin Miller to try and bring through some of the juniors. Ethan Miller (13), Finn Corcoran (12), Tom (16) & Jack Kendall (14), have all played for the squad. They currently sit in 3rd in Div 8. Tom and Ethan who played with Glynn Stevens and Justin Miller fought back from 4-0 down at the turn overcoming first match nerves and narrowly lost 5-3. Justin played with Jack in their second match, and with Glynn away, Finn and Tom played together and the boys did fantastic, winning the match 5-3.
In the U16 Team Tennis league, Ethan Miller and Luke Mitchell picked up the win vs Marlborough in their only match so far. This is Purton’s first win in the league in any age group since 2014 when Oliver Madsen and Tom Kendall beat Great Bedwyn in the U14 age group.
Luke was his usual steady self and won 6-3 6-3 against their number one. Ethan put up a good show at number 2 but lacked a bit of consistency and lost 1-6 0-6 although the match was much tighter than the score suggested. The boys then raced to a 6-1 3-1 lead in the doubles before Marlborough fought back for a 4-3 lead. The Purton lads then reeled on the next 3 games to secure victory. Well done to all the Juniors!
The Men are also top of their Team Tennis league, beating Downton 12-0 and Chippenham and Riverside both 8-4.
